GREENWICH — Some houses exude a sense of history, giving off a feeling of having lived previous lives.

On North Maple Street, a center-hall colonial looks like the kind of place where Nick and Nora Charles stopped in for cocktails, while their dog Asta cavorted in the backyard. It has an old-world, gracious feel.

The house certainly has a past - it was built in 1925 - but it has gone through a number of transformations.

The house has been rebuilt, down to the studs. The roof the windows, all of the appliances, the heating and air conditioning, it’s basically new construction,” said the listing agent, Meri Thomas.

As one approaches the home at 314 North Maple in central Greenwich, the characteristics of a traditional colonial are all there. There are the dormered windows arranged in a symmetric fashion, and a columned entryway that adds balance to the overall picture. The house is painted in a neutral gray, another note of elegant understatement.

Extensive interior work has been completed inside the house during a three-year renovation.

It has wonderful millwork, all custom made, with arches. Built-ins in the living room. So beautifully executed. It looks old but it’s brand new,” said Thomas.

Visitors to the home often assume it was put together by someone in the design field, which is not the case, and the combination of visual design and execution definitely makes an impression on guests.

The entryway makes a statement with overdoing it. “The center hall is double height, and as you wind your way upstairs, there’s a wonderful master bedroom, with a sitting area and walk-in dressing room.”

A third level has a playroom and office, a big space, with its own bathroom. There’s also a large area for storage or recreation in a lower level.

The house was built and modified with entertaining in mind. “The terrace wraps all around the back of the house, and there’s a large flat, level lawn,” the agent said. A new landscaping scheme compliments the stone-work in the read of the home, a classic New England feature. The house sits on nearly an acre of land.

The large kitchen is flanked by family room that opens off it, along with a pantry.

The house is close to town, making it even more of a rarity — an old house with land that close to the business district. “These very beautiful, tastefully put together homes are few and far between,” said Thomas.

The home is listed at $3.4 million through David Ogilvy and Associates.
